Top of the holiday weekend to y’all. A holiday weekend that’s already started off big, movie-wise – the third Twilight film, Eclipse, opened at Tuesday night at Midnight and went on to break The Dark Knight‘s one-day Summer record, making 68.5 million dollars. That’s second only to its predecessor Twilight: New Moon, which opened with 73 million or so in November. So the Twihards are going strong, and I’m sure Summit’s glad they split the fourth and final book into two movies right about now.
On the less celebratory side, M Night’s Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender has opened to positively brutal reviews, beating out a movie I’d promised my brain I’d never have to think of again, Brendan Fraser’s Furry Vengeance, for the coveted spot of lowest rating on the Tomatometer for the 2010 Summer so far. Way to go, Night! This’ll make ‘em forget all about Lady on the Water.
Elsewhere Dame Helen Mirren’s living up to her title of sexagenarian in Love Ranch, where she and the suddenly out-of-retirement Joe Pesci build a brothel in the desert and stuff it with Gina Gershon and Bai Ling. The pictures of the Dame’s dirty pillows floating in a bathtub that she took for New York magazine seem to have taken over the conversation though, and good for them. They’ve lived, they’ve got stories to tell.
Last weekend’s box office made for a semi-delightful turn of events – Pixar’s wonderful Toy Story 3 stayed at the top and is on route to become their biggest film yet, toppling Finding Nemo from his little fish perch, and helping Tom Cruise’s latest release Knight and Day to belly-flop into oblivion. Hooray! Now maybe he can go away for good? People still went and saw Adam Sandler’s pee-pool movie though, so the good news was mixed.
Some huge movie news broke Thursday night – Andrew Garfield has won the role of Peter Parker and his spandexed alter-ego Spider-Man in the reboot of that franchise. It’ll be directed by Marc Webb, who made (500) Days of Summer. Who’s Andrew Garfield, you ask? He’s only one of the best young actors working today, I reply. Seek of the small British dramaBoy A and the not-so-small British epic Red Riding and you’ll see what I’m talking about (both really fantastic films you should see anyway). He was also great in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus opposite Heath Ledger as the orphan boy in love with the boss’s daughter.
And before Garfield slips into his spider suit he’s gonna be seen in Never Let Me Go, the adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s mind-blowingly wonderful book, directed by music-video artist Mark Romanek (One Hour Video) and co-starring It Gals Keira Knightley and CaRey Mulligan. NLMG can’t get here fast enough as far as I’m concerned, so I find it fateful that they just moved its release date three weeks earlier to the middle of September. Never let them tell you that casting wish-spells with just a hint of human sacrifice doesn’t work! Dare to dream!
