All right, I admit I am as obsessed as the next Twilight fan about a little town called Forks and its inhabitants, especially the shiny sparkly ones. It wasn’t until I had re-read Eclipse a couple of times before I fully appreciated the multiple storylines. Eclipse has it all – a love triangle, vampire back-stories, a formidable villain, and a battle at the end with arguably the best showdown of all four books!! I tend to muse about little details that generally interest no one else but me (don’t get me started on Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings) so you’ll just have to excuse me if you don’t agree. Even still, there were some minor issues with Eclipse that if I were able to chat with Stephanie Meyer, I would want to ask what was on her mind when she was writing these characters and plot points and if she could change anything, what would she change? Oh, relax people, Meyer all but said that if she could re-write part of the series she would since she feels she is a better writer now. So on that note, what else would we chat about?
First, I would ask Meyer what was behind Jacob’s characterization? Every time I re-read a book from the Twilight series I feel differently about the characters. I mean I really did like Jacob from New Moon but the Jacob in Eclipse got on my nerves. On one hand I get that he’s supposed to be the polar opposite to Edward, but one issue I had with Eclipse is Jacob’s obnoxious behavior. Every two-seconds he’s bitching about vampires being dead, blood-thirsty killers yet he all but ignores the fact that werewolves aren’t exactly known for their ability to brew the perfect cup of tea. Jacob’s argument is that the werewolves are technically still human -- blah, blah, blah. Have you seen Werewolf in London or the Underworld series? No, well let's just say the werewolves aren't sitting around trading recipes. Here’s the thing, if you can shape shift, then it sounds like the "same side of the supernatural coin" if you ask me. We get it, vampires are bad -- what else you got? The repetitive vampire smack-talk was so tiring.
Here’s what I would say to Jake if I were Bella: “Dude, you’re a brat! Just shut it, you hypocrite! You have no argument -- it’s a draw. You’re both super freaks of nature, neither of whom chose to be what you are so zip it!”
Speaking of hypocrites, another issue I had was Charlie’s reaction to Jacob when he tried to kiss Bella against her will. “Good for you, kid,” Charlie congratulated him. Really?? I don’t think so! Aren’t you the police chief and Bella’s dad? If any boy tried that on my daughter, no matter how fond I may be of this boy, he’d be getting a few choice words and my shit-kickers up his ass!! Sure, Meyer inserted a quick exchange between Charlie and Bella later about how people shouldn’t do unto others without their permission, but seriously, it just made me scratch my head and wonder what about Jake is supposed to be appealing because nothing says romance like annoying the f#*k out of someone, and forcing themselves on you! Sorry, Team Jacob.
In fact, I was mildly irritated by Charlie (love Billy Burke!) for his unfair treatment of Edward. Granted, I can see how Edward would be on Charlie’s shit list after the whole Italy debacle. But let’s see, high-speed motorcycle racing and cliff diving sounds like good wholesome fun so it’s perfectly natural that Charlie would be fine with Jake, right?
Remind me again why Bella loves Jacob? Hmm, what did he say -- “…like me for the way I am, bad habits and all.” Uh, no thanks. I’ll take a gentleman vampire any day!
If Jake had been a little less bratty, he would have been more likable to me. Then perhaps I can possibly see Jake as a contender against Edward; otherwise, it’s no contest! Am I wrong? Please chime in because I genuinely don't get it. After reading Eclipse again, (I won’t tell you how many times) Jake was just annoying. Team Jacob, what makes Jake (not Taylor) so appealing?
To be continued…for more benign Eclipse banter, check back with us later this week.

neither of them wanted to concede their position.
As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats cheap supra shoes and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?"
"Yep," the wife eplied, "in-laws."
