America's oldest and most beloved teenager, Dick Clark died yesterday at the age of 82. Clark was a show biz giant, being the creator and producer of some of the biggest and popular shows on television (American Music Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve).
For me, when I think of Dick Clark, I don't think of New Year's Eve, I think of American Bandstand -- period. As a teen growing up in America, Dick Clark was everyone's personal Pied Piper and harbinger of cool. He was the guy who introduced some of the biggest names in pop music to the world. My tastes have changed significantly since then, but I still can't forget when I saw Madonna for the first time...or Wham! or Blondie or The Go-Gos and gangs of other groups. Our Saturdays were certainly altogether more fun due to American Bandstand. And for that, I thank you, Mr. Clark. May you rest in peace.
