Oh man. Multiple media outlets are reporting that country/pop superstar Taylor Swift has been cast as Eponine in the big screen adaptation of Tom Hooper's (The King's Speech) Les Miserables. Swift beat out Evan Rachel Wood, Lea Michelle and Scarjo (yeah, her again) for the role. Amanda Seyfried will play Cosette, daughter of Anne Hathaway's Fantine. Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham Carter, Russell Crowe and Sacha Baron Cohen round out this all star cast!
I'm digging on all of the above actors, although I'll reserve judgement on Russell Crowe for the time being. Visions of Pierce Brosnan's singing in Mamma Mia keeps tugging in the back of mind and try as I might to squash that memory, it simply won't go away. Thank goodness Crowe isn't the lead though.
Anyway, Amanda Seyfried is an excellent choice. She gets many a free pass based on her singing chops. Her version of Abba's "Thank You For the Music" is so delightful that she converted me from being a hater. I didn't even mock her in Red Riding Hood which says a lot!
On the other hand, Taylor Swift as Eponine is just miscast. Sure, she can sing and she's a songwriter and musician and she's a great role model and all that jazz, but I can't be the only one who thinks her voice is all wrong for this. I hate the hell out of Lea Michelle but even I have to admit that she would be more right for the part than Swift.
How are we supposed to be happy about this, people? Sigh.
