Well, well, well, what do we have here? Director Peter Jackson has confirmed that he will split The Hobbit into not two, but three films, reports Deadline. Jackson strongly hinted of this at Comic-Con when he said that there is "a wealth of storytelling that came from 125 of appendices that JRR Tolkien included in a later publication of The Return of the King." The third film is slated to release summer 2014.
Beehivers, I'm kind of mixed about this. Now on one hand, even a LOTR fan such as myself has to admit that making three films out of one book is more than taking the piss. Yes, I know this is Hollywood just bleeding every last cent out of this property and all that jazz; however, I'm a ridiculous LOTR geek and I couldn't be happier. I'm that nerd who read every word of the LOTR appendices, as well as combed through and memorized the various maps of Middle-earth and family trees on the origins of Elves, wizards, hobbits, Numenoreans, and I might even have a collectible life-size Gollum somewhere in my garage, but that's beside the point. Yes, you can say I'm slightly obsessed with Tolkien so if you think I'm doing the happy dance right now, well...you'd be right. And I might even be doing it in my good cloak pinned by my Lothlorien Elven brooch. At the end of the day, with Peter Jackson and the original cast and crew involved, we know this trilogy will be superb. Wahoo!
Thoughts -- Hollywood at its greedy worst or hellz yeah, more hairy Hobbit feet?!!
